The View From NCS Technologies

Zero Clients in healthcare

Just back from a whirlwind week at HIMMS 2015!  While hospitals and other healthcare organizations have been early adopters of our Cirrus LT mobile zero client laptop, I went to Chicago this week a little uncertain about how widely adoption of VDI technology might occur.  By the afternoon of opening day, all of my uncertainty was gone.  We showed off Cirrus LT and gave a sneak peak of Cirrus DT WiFi, the latest addition to the NCS Technologies PCoIP mobile zero client family. medical_cart

VDI in healthcare is ramping up quickly, and we learned plenty from attending the HIMMS15 show.  Namely, healthcare professionals told us they NEED zero clients as part of their virtualization strategy.  We found that physicians, clinicians and administrators have similar end-user data security requirements as those in the military, intelligence or other national security positions, or professionals in financial services.  In many of these cases, lives are on the line if data is lost or stolen. In all of the cases, private data is at risk.

We learned this week that healthcare professionals need to access data from a variety of devices and locations.  Zero clients enable the "anyone, anywhere" scenario because there is no persistent user data on the device.  Anyone can grab any zero client and log in to their virtual environment from any location.  We learned that physicians, nurses and other healthcare workers are constantly running from one appointment to the next and are spending a third of their day entering patient data into databases and reports.

Zero clients offer a consistent user experience no matter which device they use. From a performance standpoint, they are all the same.  Because the desktop is hosted on a powerful server in a datacenter, the user experience is always the same.  Whether you are sitting in an exam room or standing at a WOW, you can be sure you have the same up-to-date operating system and application set every time you log in.

We learned a LOT in Chicago this week and we are looking forward to seeing you at HIMMS16 conference next year in Las Vegas!  If you would like to learn more about zero clients in healthcare, please download our whitepaper here.
